General VersaClimber comments:

I had been looking for a VC for many years, I used one up in Alaska when I was in the Military. I finally found a used 108H off of Craigslist (Phoenix) for $800. It was a little used, 1992 model in decent shape. After a little disassembly, cleaning, lube, and re-assembly, It works like new. I only had to replace the lower pully on the cable system (an easy fix with a quick trip to the local hardware store). It was worth the extra cost up front, for a machine, I plan on using for many years. For those of you looking for a used one, keep checking the ad's in your area, they do pop up for sale, but the get sold very fast. I got lucky with mine and was the first one to respond to the ad, and the seller was nice enough to give me first dib's out of the 8 people who responded within the first 24 hrs the ad was up.

Hi, I'm looking for specs and any other information you can give me on the versaclimber CL 109. Thank you!

I'm looking for any model versa climber for sale in Minnesota. Thanks.

Dee, I had 3 Versaclimbers up until recently, 2 were the home models, one was the gym version with adjustable resistance. To be honest with you, the home version is very challenging, if you use it properly. You see, if you use the adjustable resistance model, you most likely will have it set at a given resistance and just use it at that level(acting lik a fixed resistance model), but you have a choice of increasing your stroke distance on either the adjustable or fixed versions and that is huge. Also important is the fact that you can sprint on either of them. Have you ever tried spirnts on the VC? They are super difficult!. I think you will be challenged with either. and if you ever feel that the fixed one is getting easier, try sprinting or increasing yur step/stroke distance. They are like a fixed resistance bike, yeah, might not hae the bells and whistles a 21 speed will have, but your workouts can adjust accordingly to increase or decrease them. I currently use the fixed resistance model at home for an hour a day. An awesome workout! Follow my blog at http://www.versaclimber.blogspot.com

*knob* for resistance

Dee - Mar. 13, 2010 - 12:57 pm

I am thinking of purchasing a 108h model used. I am concerned about the "fixed resistance" and not liking it. Currently I use an old (maybe late 80's model?) at the gym. It has just the know for resistance and just the timer. I'm happy with that. Does anyone know if the home model fixed resistance would be as good of a workout. I know you can wear the weighted vest, but don't want to do all that. I'm afraid the fixed resistance won't be challenging enough

Dee - Mar. 13, 2010 - 12:56 pm

I'm a 5'2" former cyclist. (2-5k yr + Mt Washington) I've had back problems and muscle imbalance problems that keep me off the bike. I would really like to get back in shape and lose the extra weight I'm carrying around. Any recommendations? Is the cross crawl a better solution for me? If so, why?

Rachel () - Feb. 24, 2010 - 10:49 pm

I am looking to buy a used VC in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Please email me if you have one for sale. Thanks, Dave

David Dudo () - Feb. 23, 2010 - 1:25 pm

The only shortcoming of the VC is when you increase the resistance you have no idea of how many METS you're using. I wish the company would do something about that.

richard Hall () - Feb. 8, 2010 - 11:55 am

Hello

I am interested in purchasing a versaclimber. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Michelle- I tried sending you an email. Would you please respond if you are still selling...

Thanks

I am looking to buy a used Versaclimber, one of the home model...108H or 108HP in the Northern California area.
Thanks

Debbie () - Feb. 6, 2010 - 6:46 pm

I have recently bought a used versa climber cl1080. I am wondering what kind of oil would be best to use for the motor and what kind of lubricant would be best for the chain?

Jake () - Feb. 4, 2010 - 7:21 pm

I'm looking for gyms/health clubs in Washington DC (especially downtown) with a VersaClimber. My current gym has one, but I want to shop around. Any advice? Other than calling and calling around? :)

Where can I find detailed info about the extent to which specific muscle groups are engaged during a VersaClimber workout? I am wondering how serious of an upper body, and specifically chest, workout one gets.

joe () - Dec. 13, 2009 - 1:59 pm

Does anyone know where I can demo the versa climber in New York or New Jersey?

Maria - Nov. 11, 2009 - 10:41 am

I had an opportunity to go see and try a CL-108H model VersaClimber from someone selling one locally. It was actually my first time on a versaclimber, and I loved it! However, i did not like the pulley system on the home model. Do the commercial models have roller chains driving the motion? I was watching a youtube video of JC Santana demonstrating his LX model, and it seemed that those were chain operated. I would prefer a machine that is driven by the chains and with variable resistance. Any thoughts/comments/input?

Fitgirl-atx () (URL) - Aug. 29, 2009 - 7:51 pm

Would like to demo a machine. (San Diego ) thanx........

Trent () - Aug. 12, 2009 - 05:01 am

I've had my VersaClimber for about 12 years now and still love it. It is the most effective way for me to get in shape and stay in shape that I've found. I am currently have it disassembled and am giving it a thorough cleaning. In 12 years, this is the 2nd time I've done this. It always feels like brand new, once I do this.
Over the last couple years, I've worked long hours and stopped exercising. I have to admit, I put on a few pounds (well, truthfully, quite a few). Starting January 1 this year, I got back into my climber and the results have been great! I keep a log of my weight and body fat on my website (web.mac.com/buzzsmith) under the "Fitness" link. As they say, the proof's in the pudding (or avoidance of pudding...)
If you're thinking about getting one of these, DO IT. You'll have no regrets. Here's a hint: get some music to workout to that has a consistent beat (I like 140 beats per minute). It makes the workout so easy!
-Buzz

Richard D. "Buzz" Smith (URL) - Jun. 20, 2009 - 12:51 pm

Alexis, Any fitness level is fine on a climber. Like any peice of cardio equipment, you have to start somewhere. You are totally in control of your own speed and step height. So basically your intensity is up to you. You can climb 2 inches if you want or 20 inches. Or you can climb 40 ft/min or 300 ft/min. That is the great thing about the VersaClimber, beside the fact you get one heck of a work out!

Versaclimber - Jun. 4, 2009 - 2:21 pm

HELLO, I have ordered a new Exervibe, the vibrating Versaclimber, and expect delivery in a week or so. I would very much like to hear comments from people who have used this machine. Any marked benefits? How does it compare to a standard Versaclimber? I would also love to hear from anyone who has assembled this machine. How difficult is it? Should I have plenty of rum on hand? Randy W Sanibel. Fl

Randy Wayne White (URL) - Jun. 4, 2009 - 1:22 pm

My husband and I are looking at getting the HP model. He runs regularly so I think he should do fine on the machine. I have not been very active and I am concerned that it would be too intense for me. Is it possible to just do a "slow" climb, even without the variable resistance feature? The models with the variable resistance features are out of our price range... Thank you for your help.

Alexis - Jun. 4, 2009 - 04:51 am

Used a VersaClimber in a gym years back and it became my favorite. Considering 108HP but wife has concerns about what to do if it doesn't work for her. Do you have any kind of "30-day return policy" or something similar? Thanks.

Gil () - May. 14, 2009 - 11:33 pm

Eileen,

The 108 SM VersaClimber would be a better choice for you for two reasons. One, the SM has the cross crawl climbing pattern which is your natural running motion. The 108 CM has the standard climbing pattern.

Two, the 1-20" step height of the SM will not limit you. As a shorter person your natural strides on the VersaClimber will be between 4- 8" however if you want to do sprint intervals on the VersaClimber you may want to take 12-14" strides. You can do this on the SM.

VersaClimber

VersaClimber () - May. 13, 2009 - 5:06 pm

I am considering purchasing the cm model. IS it a good choice for a short person, as opposed to the longer stride units. I am in running condition, (18 mets). I like the idea of shorter stride but not sure if I will regret the limitation after I am acclimated to the machine.

I am a retired Maryland State Police Officer living in the Sate of Maryland. I was injured in the line of duty, no fault of my own and it is almost impossible for me to work out when it comes to any weight lifting or running on a tread mill. The Versa Climber is a piece of equipment that I have used twice in the last couple of weeks at a gym on a guest pass from a friend. The one surpising thing to me, is it didn't bother my upper or lower joints that I have injuries too. Unfortunenately, with my retirement,I can not afford this equipment new and my health insurance will not help me out. Does anyone out there have a commercial unit for sale at a very reasonable price. Please let me know. Thanks Tim

Tim Dimemmo () - Mar. 16, 2009 - 6:33 pm

Susan, Yes the Versaclimber would be great. For one you will have no impact on your knees or hips. Your step height and ft/min is up to you. Last but not lease, why not burn more caloies for 20 minutes a day than a bike, treadmill or an ellptical?

Versaclimber - Mar. 4, 2009 - 5:05 pm

To Clean a Home climber you would use a 3 in one hig performacne spray lub with PTFE. Do not use any petroleum based products to clean, that will cause the smell.
All the manuals are on our site, under customer service. Or you can call our service department at 1800.237.2271 x 226. thank you.

DS () - Jan. 22, 2009 - 12:55 pm

MET rating for VersaClimber

50 feet per minute = 6.2 METs (first time)
100 feet per minute = 10.5 METs (average speed)

140 feet per minute = 13.7 METs (regular climber)

170 feet per minute = 16.1 METs (conditioned athlete)
200 feet per minute = 18.9 METs (conditioned elite athlete)

VersaClimber () - Jan. 12, 2009 - 6:15 pm

Does anyone know the MET rating for the Versa Climber?

CP () - Jan. 5, 2009 - 07:12 am

Hey, The Truth, your comment is both inaccurate and unfair. VersaClimber does not need to create testimonials. Why not be a man and contact the company with whatever your real problem is?

I have a 108LX (commercial version) for sale, it is in storage in Orlando FL. I will take $1800.00 for it, it was used 'maybe' 2 hrs total. It sat in a house that wasn't occupied much. I will be down there this month to sell allot of items. Let me know if your interested. Otherwise it goes to my brother, so please don't try to offer less. Its in MINT shape and it has the Mat as well. Might need some oil that would be it.

What is the best lubricant? We have one of the older models (CL-108HP) and it becoming really stiff here lately.

CARL () - Nov. 19, 2008 - 5:36 pm

Mark, That is a great pace. Try doing intervals after warming up. 10 sec. sprints -1 minute slower pace x 6. then cool down. That may actually burst you into flames.

Hi... we have a versaclimber from 1989-ish, purchased in Costa Mesa. It's a 108 H with no handrails. It's in mint condition. We need to sell it because of knee surgery restrictions. Can someone tell me a fair price? Thanks.

Iris () - Jul. 18, 2008 - 12:50 pm

Question for all users...I need advice!
I am starting to get to a gym daily - at age 37. Never been a very active person. Last year I had back surgery and a hysterctomy, with numerous complications. I currently spend 30 minutes on the elliptcal, 30 minutes rowing, and if I feel up to it or have the time (3 kids), I do about 20 minutes on the the stair master, in additoin to core nautilaus machines. Of course, i ahve weight to lose, but I am tired of being weak. I noticed everyone that dares to use the versaclimber at the gym is in awesome shape. Yesterday I forced my fiancee to show me how to use it. I lasted a minute. (He told me at his best he lasted about 5. Last night my back, shoulders, and stomach were sore, but I am still pretty darned interested. What is the usual beginning steps, etcc? Any advice is very appreciated. Yes, I am more then motivated but how does one start out? etc. I am sortof shy and don't have the nerve to ask anyone at the the club which is why I am posting here. Plus, seems like everyone here is a long time user.

I am looking for extended lateral arm bars to enlarge (at least double) the width of my grip (on my 108H). Any clues out there??

Anyone know what health clubs/gyms in Southern California have the latest (newest) versaclimbers? I belong to LA Fitness and of the 20 facilities I frequent, only 4 of those clubs have Versaclimbers. Those 6 versaclimbers (two of the clubs have two units) are old (and rusty). I would join any club in a heartbeat to workout on a new-ish model.

Just purchased a used CL 109 for our fire station. I'll need to purchase an accumulator which should be no problem. My concern is the light oxidation that has built up in the tracks and it makes the rollers seem to grate slightly. I've sprayed some LPS in there but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Any suggestions. Also is there a .pdf instruction manual I can download and what kind of oil do I use in the accumulator? - Thanks

I just picked up a used VersaClimber last night. It is fantastic!
From what I can tell, it is a model 108 LX or LPX. It has the oil reservoir exposed on the top. The guy I bought it from did not have the owners manual and I am not sure how to work the console. This machine could be as old as 4-5 years but still in great shape. Is it possible to get an owners manual or instructions on using the console?

Thank you!

Hey Dirk,

Liddell trains on (3) VersaClimbers. These units are made up of a LX and the other two models are the ALX or "fixed resistance" sprinter models.

Juan Carlos "JC" This is also true for JC, he has 3 units as well.
For more information or to order please call us at 1.800.237.2271

Best regards!

VersaClimber - Sep. 24, 2007 - 4:22 pm

I am wondering if any experienced users can comment on the importance or value of variable resistance? With no resistance control will I eventually out-train its capabilities. Same with the cross-crawl. I know what it is but what are the benefits of each method or why should I chose one or the other. Has anyone used an Exervibe Climber? Is the SMA the equivalent base VersaClimber?

Note to Versaclimber: Are current model manuals available to non-owners? And finally, the tiny low-resolution pictures on your website should link to full size versions. That would really improve it.

Not only did he dig up a manual for my older Versa Climber, but was personable and offered great advice on keeping my climber running like a champ! What an excellent reflection on a top notch company to have him as your service support! Thank you.

I bought a CL1090 recently. Everything works, but it came without a manual. I'd be willing to pay for a photocopy if anyone has a manual for this model. Thanks.

I am thinking of buying a versaclomber (commercial unit). Anyone know of wehre I can try one out in Atlanta, GA before i buy. Also anyone know where I can get a used unit?
thanks,
alan

Hey Chuck,

The 109 unit you are referring to is a 9 foot model that has been discontinued. This unit was made for the taller user/athlete; now this added reach and stretch is achieved by simply adding “arm extender” accessories. All commercial units stand 7’10” tall rather than 9 feet tall. And all home version VersaClimbers stand 7’6” tall and use a coated cable.

The hydraulic that you indicated is for variable control resistance units (the tension is created through the hydraulic pump) and all use chain.

Commercial units can be ordered with “fixed” resistance or with “variable” control resistance.
The home units are all coated cable, and only come with “fixed” resistance.

I'm looking at a refurbished CL 109, must be an older model since it has a chain drive instead of hydraulic. Anyone know the advantages and disadvantes of the chain drive. Suspect is is NOT variable resistance.
Thanks,
Chuck

My daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year, and she is recovering. The Versa Climber is one exercise recomended for her to do, unfortunenately, we can not afford a new one or can we convince our insurance company to pay for one. Does anyone out there have a commercial unit for sale at a very reasonable price or they are using their Climber for a clothes rack. Please let me know. Thanks Keith

Hey people, as an ultra distance runner I have utilized the Versa Climber for years as a cross training tool that allows me to not only stay in top shape but improve it--so effective I'm looking to purchase more climbers.

Brian () - May. 24, 2007 - 11:27 am

Good question Paul, By adding optional "arm extenders", a person who is up to 6'9" can achieve full reach / range of motion--so you are in luck.

Regarding, "Fixed" resistance, it simply means you do not have the ability to adjust or control the stepping speed--it's pre set at the factory with little resistance or with just 10 lbs fixed force. On the other hand, "variable" resistance is the ability to vary/control the tension or slow down (requiring more leg force) on the stepping action of up to 500lbs of resistance.

VersaClimber () - May. 22, 2007 - 12:20 pm

hey,
i'm 6'5". am i too tall for a versa climber. and what does fixed resistance mean?

paul () - May. 21, 2007 - 5:29 pm

This cardio piece is worth every penny! I'm in the best shape of my life--thanks

Our 108LX model is fantastic but when doing intervals the feet climbed per minute function (and everything else except the timer) does not register after the second set any ideas?

Ross () - Feb. 22, 2007 - 10:54 am

I used to work out on a versa climber years ago as a regular part of my training as a football player. Now I'm doing senior olympics and I am looking for a used unit. I had a home unit ... Does anyone know where I can find a club unit reasonably priced?

Keith () - Feb. 6, 2007 - 7:15 pm

Ron RE: Why are interval sprints on a VersaClimber so effective?

"Short bouts of very intense exercise improved muscle health and performance comparable to several weeks of traditional endurance training," says Martin Gibala, an associate professor in the department of kinesiology of McMaster

The research, Journal of Applied Physiology, found that performing repeated bouts of high-intensity "sprint"-type exercise resulted in profound changes in skeletal muscle and endurance capacity, similar to training that requires hours of exercise each week.

Non-impact, unlike sprints "on the field" VersaClimber sprints are zero impact on knees / joints--that really matters when an individual weighs more than 220+ lbs
No Top End VersaClimber provides limitless speed output-you go as fast as you can, on a split second
Total Body VersaClimber engages every major muscle group in one fluid natural motion

Great question Ron.

i recently purchased a 108H Versaclimber (love it!) and read about how to add resistance by using a weighted vest. Let me tell you, they work well together--I've been dropping pounds like crazy...if you are interested in a weight vest visit w8vest.com

Why are interval sprints on a versaclimber so effective?

Ron () - Jan. 7, 2007 - 10:50 am

Yes...the 109 is a nine foot model which I believe is no longer made. Was made for taller athletes/basket ball players. Now versaclimber offers arm extenders to be used on the 108 LX that achieve the same reach and added stretch the 109 model offers. All other models are 108 which means 8 foot (actually stand 7'10" tall).
As far as, heart rate monitoring all units can be ordered with this feature for a couple hundred dollars extra--which is well worth it!!

JT.

JT () - Jan. 2, 2007 - 9:39 pm

Has anyone heard of a versaclimber model 109LX?? Is this similar in features to the 108LX? Can the heart rate monitor feature be added?? Any advice would be very much appreciated!!

yeah, I've seen the "ice man" Chuck Liddell use a Versa Climber at the pit... Hackleman was pushing him on some sort of sprinting routine--crazy cardio.
The versa climber is the real deal--its an awesome workout.

By far Versaclimber is the best cardio machine out there! Just 15 minutes and my entire body is effectively conditioned--it takes me double the amount of time on a treadmill. Versa climber workout is the real deal. Thanks you guys.

Brian W. () - Nov. 3, 2006 - 9:44 pm

Sasha--
Yes, Chuck "The Ice Man" Liddell does in fact train on the VersaClimber. His favorite is running intense interval sprints or "Taku Intervals" where you sprint for :90 seconds active rest for :90 seconds then sprint another :90 seconds x multiple sets--very intense type of total body cardio training.
Ideal for combat training.

I found by turning my palms in facing me, I can really focus on my biceps when pulling down during my versaclimber work out--does any one else do this?

Paul - Aug. 31, 2006 - 3:42 pm

My VersaClimber has been going strong for over 10 years--it's built like a tank.

Frank - Aug. 15, 2006 - 09:39 am

I agree, if you are just starting out, be sure to take a short step.
